All Quiet On The Western Front
Chapter 1
Many of the characters are introduced and the narrator shows what life is like behind the front. It is boring.
1984 pg 118-136
Winston and the dark haired girl, named Julia, meet again in a concealed location. They keep their voices low in case anyone is near. Julia is 15 years younger than winston, however she is attracted to him because they share the same hatred towards the party. The party wants sexual relations to be free of desire, it becomes political. It is important to note that the place they met at is the only place of beauty in london. Julia says to never go home the same way you went out. The next time they meet it is in the bell tower of an old church. Usually they only got to talk in what they call installments but if the thought police come near they stop and pick up the next day. Julia is 26 and has no memory prior to the 1960s. We learn that julia and winston are different with how they like to rebel against the party. Julia isn’t afraid to break the rules, and almost wants to do everything the party doesn’t want her to do, and winston is rebelling outwardly which julia is unlikely to do. Also winston is a pessimist, and julia is an optimist.

Dracula
pages 77-101
Mina wakes and finds lucy gone. She goes to the church and finds her but sees a shadowy figure behind her with a pale face and red eyes. Lucy is holding her throat. Mina takes her to bed, then she notices 2 puncture marks on lucy’s neck but she thought it was from safety pins. A couple nights later, Mina sees Lucy at her window with a large bird. Lucy then wakes exhausted. Lucy’s fiance’s dad feels better, the wedding can go on. Mrs Westenra’s heart is failing, Lucy is weakening and no word about Jonathan. lucy’s puncture marks are getting bigger. Lucy doesn’t recall the shadowy figure. Mina received a letter that jonathan has been in the hospital for 6 weeks. Later that night Renfield has escaped out his window. Stewart and another man catch him.
Mina went to Budipez to meet Jonathan. Jonathan is very illand does not remember any recent events. Lucy writes that she is doing better. Renfield is not speaking so Stewart lets him escape but follows him for info. Renfield goes to carfax chapel, sees a big bat then returns to his room. Lucy reports (in her diary) that she is having bad dreams, trouble sleeping, waking up tired and pale. lucy gets examined by a pro and confirms that there is no physical condition to blame but is still worried. Steward reports that Renfield gets violent around noon and thinks the sun is causing it. Steward sends telegrams telling that lucy is better.
An important part of this section is when Lucy has puncture marks on her neck and starts to get sick. It basically tells you what’s going to happen next.
Gullivers travels 86-89
Gulliver was near starving to death when the queen of the land came to see him perform. The queen buys him from his former Master. Gulliver requests to have Glumdalclitch come with him to the palace because she has been his nurse since he arrived. From there she takes him and Glumdalclitch to the palace to meet the king. The king then observes him and deems him not clockwork. He then has some of the more learned men of the kingdom come to decide how someone could possibly be so small.
The most important thing from my reading was Gulliver’s personal description of his treatment by the Farmer.
1984 pages 105-126
The new chapter starts with Winston Smith after talking with the old man and seeing the lady following. Winston is just recollecting on what he just learned with the man. Nothing much really else happens because it is a new chapter in a new section.
The Metamorphosis pgs.38-44
Gregors dad stated to through apples at Gregor one by one the first apple grazed his back but caused no harm the second apple made it feel like Gregor was nailed to the floor he couldnt move and started to loose his senses>Gregos sister rushed to her dad to get him to stop and spare his life.Gregor got back into his room but had a apple lodged in his flesh and no one wanted to remove it. I find it interesting that Gregor bares such a burden to his dad and how his Dad cannot stand to look at Gregor anymore.
All quite on the western front
Chapter 8
Paul returns to camp. There are Russian prisoners there also. Paul noticed how brotherly they were. That he knew nothing of them not even a name, but he sees how bad it is for them. Before he returns to the front. His father and sister visit. They give him jam and potato cake from his ill mom. He ponders if he should eat them or give them to the prisoners. He decided to give them half because his mom was in pain making them.
One important thing is that even though he doesn’t get a lot of food anyway and they were from his ill mother, Paul still decides to give half of the potato cakes to the prisoners
Dracula 119-150
Jonathan returns home and Mina helps nurse him back to health. He is weak and brittle due to his escape. He is confused about what had happened, and so he gives his journal to Mina so she can read about his time. They end up getting married right away and Mina raps up the journal as a gift to Jonathan, saying that she will not read it unless necessary. Lucy begins to feel very ill. Arthur asks Dr. Steward to patient her back to health but he asks for the help of his friend Van Hesling. They end up giving Lucy blood transfusions and discovering the mark on her neck. She experiences evil nightmares so they deck her and her room with garlic.
The most significant part is Lucy’s decline in health and the realisation of the mark on her neck.
Pg: 63-75
When the Second Company was hit by the flurry bomb they all rushed to put their gas masks on Paul had to help a couple of men who were just standing in fear, they all took cover under something some even hid where the bomb went off just to be out of sight. After awhile Paul looks out of his hole and realises that one of the men was sitting there without his mask but seemed to be ok, Paul walked over to him but on the way there he notices a recruit laying on the ground with his hip being nothing but flesh left, Paul and the other men know he won’t survive like this.
The Metamorphosis pg. 73-84
Gregor starts to lose his memory of his past life more and more as his mother and sister start to take out some of the furniture, so when they leave the room he attaches himself to one of the only things left in his room, a panting. His sister notices him hanging n the wall and tell their mother to go sit down in the living room, she faints after seeing him on the wall. Worried, Gregor breaks out to try and help him mother, but when his dad comes home, he starts chasing Gregor. Then his father finds some apples and starts throwing them at Gregor, trying to kill him until his mother wakes up and pleads to him not to kill their son.
An important part of this section is that the family starts to get rather annoyed with Gregor’s presence and his own father even tries to kill him.
