Gullivers travels 90-151
His account of his time in the king and queens court continues. Gulliver is given clothes, furniture, and other necessities in his size by the queens request. He talks about how grotesque the giants look because he can see all of their imperfections so clearly. From there he recounts his misadventures with the court jester, who was the smallest man in the kingdom before Gulliver. There are many instances where Gulliver is nearly injured because of the size of everything around him from massive hornets to being abducted by a monkey the size of an elephant. He also witnesses an execution. After some time at the palace the king takes a great interest in Europe and askes many things of Gulliver pertaining to it. After many hours of discussion the king determined that the people of Europe are very vile and have many vices. He attempts to teach the king how to make gunpowder to which he declines because he thinks the description of what it can do is disgusting and sad. He then goes on to discuss their learning and laws which he finds flawed. After roughly two years he joins the king and queen to an ocean side venture and is abducted by a bird in a box made to help transport him safely. He is found a few hours later by a British sailor and taken home nine months later.
The preceding section starts with Gulliver being convinced to go on yet another voyage. He goes with a captain to Japan and is given control of a small cargo ship which is overtaken by pirates. Gulliver is sent out into the ocean on a small rowboat with very few provisions. He fends for his life for a few days until he sees a floating island overhead. This is Laputa which is home to a very odd group of people who see themselves as great thinkers. They spend most of their time talking about music and math and how the sun is going to consume the planet any day. They have people to hit their mouths and ears to gain their attention away from their thoughts.
The most important part of my reading was the king’s reaction to both learning about Europe and his refusal to learn how to make gunpowder.

Alexandrovna and Dunya are grief-stricken at Raskolnikov’s condition, but he becomes annoyed with them and orders them out. He upsets them both by commanding Dunya to break off her engagement. After checking up on Raskolnikov, Razumikhin visits the two women, first by -himself, then accompanied by Zossimov. The next morning, Razumikhin rises from bed overcome with regret at the bold things that he said the previous night. Zossimov greets mother, daughter, and friend and informs them that Raskolnikov’s condition has greatly improved. Dostoevsky reverses the conventional gender roles in nineteenth-century fiction: Dunya, a woman, proves the model of collected rationality and practicality, while Raskolnikov, a man, is lost in abstractions and prone to fainting. Raskolnikov continues to demonstrate his complete self-absorption as the anxiety that his guilt produces gnaws at his ability to maintain his composure. He thought about how he hasn’t seen his mother or sister in years. Sonya timidly enters Raskolnikov’s room, interrupting the conversation among Raskolnikov, Pulcheria Alexandrovna, Dunya, and Razumikhin. She bashfully invites Raskolnikov to Marmeladov’s funeral and the memorial dinner that Katerina has planned to follow it.
Dracula 150-216

Mina and Van Helsing meet up and she shares her story of Lucy’s sleep walking and Jonathan’s experience. This causes them to realize what truly happened to Lucy.
The most significant part of todays reading was Lucy’s death and the realization of her neck marks.

Nothing really happens in Chapter 5 but Muller asks the men a question, “what would they do if the war suddenly ended”, and no one really had a response to it. Because most of the men joined the military right after school and are still young adults so they don’t have anything in the real world no families or a steady job, “lost generation”. Haie says he cannot imagine himself as anything but a soldier. Many of the men fear the war ending as much as the war itself because they won’t know what to do.
