Gregor, a traveling salesman, wakes up one morning transformed into a giant bug. He is certainly not as concerned as I would be. All morning he has trouble getting out of his bed,and his family has no idea that he has changed yet. Then the general manager from Gregor’s work shows up.
An important part of this is that HE TRANSFORMED INTO A BUG! Literally it just starts out like this, nothing leading up to it.
Crime and punishment

1984 pages 1-20
Our main character is Winston Smith we learn that the current world is very rough and the government is ruling with the name Big Brother. Big brother is basically an all seeing eye that watches over all crime and everything that is going on inside.
The line that stuck out to me most is ¨Big brother is always watching¨ it is a really basic line that gets the point of how ominous yet open the governmental powers are.
Dracula Pages 1-11 Chapter 1
Jonathan Harker is traveling to Transylvania to meet Dracula to help him buy a house in London. When he gets to the city, he stays in a hotel for the night, and the people act very weird with him about going to see Dracula and he doesn’t know why. When he gets on the carriage to meet with him, he was feeling very weary and suspense. When the carriage meets with Dracula, Jonathan gets in his carriage and realizes that the “man” who he is in the carriage with is very weird and he comes very scared. Weird things start to happen during the ride to Dracula’s castle. At the end of the chapter, he saw how ugly and dark Dracula’s castle was.
A significant event was when he realized how weird Dracula was and got very scared.

Paul talked about some of the other soldiers/ friends Kropp, Leer and Muller are all 19 years old and were from the same school growing up.
The Metamorphosis pgs 3-16.
Gregor Samsa wakes up one day in his bed and to his surprise he has turned into a giant cochroach. Questioning how this happened to him he looks around his room to find everything the same as he tries to fall back asleep and forget about it he was only able to rock side to side cause of his back shape. After realizing Gregor has to find out a way to do his daily rotine like go to work he also finds his voice has changed as well as his body. The thing that stuck out to me the most was there was no warning or anything about his change it just happeed out of no where and he has to deal with all the problems it has caused him.
Gulliver’s Travels pgs 3-24
The story starts with Gulliver giving an account of his upbringing and schooling. He then goes on to tell about his earlier voyages and how he eventually found himself on the Antelope, a ship that would eventually crash while he was aboard. He recalls his time lost at sea and then falls asleep when he finally finds himself on a beach. He awakes tied to the ground surrounded by hundreds of 6-inch tall men who feed him and then transport him to the castle of the land called Lilliput. There he is kept prisoner and educated on the language of the Lilliputians. While in captivity he has become a spectacle of the land and had his pockets searched by two of the guards. He goes on to begin discussing the traditions and social customs of the Lilliputians.
The most important event of my reading today would have to be his reaction to being discovered and his transport to the castle.
Winston is living in a world of constant surveillance. Everything he does and says is monitored by a higher power. He refers to the people listening and watching as the thought police. They do this using devices called telescreens. They can pick up any sound louder than a soft whisper and can see anything that is placed in front of it. They can be dimmed but not turned off. It is advised that you always have an optimistic facial expression when facing a telescreen. Winston is almost always wearing blue overalls because they are his party’s uniform. There are 4 different ministries, all in charge of different things. The Ministry of Truth (winston’s workplace) is in charge of news, entertainment, education, and the fine arts. The Ministry of Peace is in charge of war. The Ministry of Love is in charge of maintaining law and order. lastly the Ministry of Plenty is in charge of all economic affairs. Their names in newspeak (used tobe the language of Oceania) are Minitrue, Minipax, Miniluv, and Miniplenty. The narrator also mentions that there is not much color in Winston’s world, and that he cannot remember anything from his childhood. He mentions that the Ministry of love is the scariest ministry because there are no windows, it is impossible to get in unless on official business, there are mazes of barbed wire, steel doors, hidden machine guns, and armed guards. Winston has never even been within half a kilometer of the ministry of love. Winston mentions that the people of his party are not allowed to shop in “ordinary stores”. he also says that the rule isn’t really enforced because there are certain things you cannot get anywhere else. He passes one of these stores one day and sees a book he likes. He goes in and buys the book against his better judgement. Once home he finds a spot where he cannot be seen by his telescreen and pulls out the book and decides to keep a diary. This isn’t necessarily against the law because they have no laws, however it could still be punishable by death or 25 years in a forced-labor camp. He struggles to think of what to write about before writing a seemingly random story.
That’s where i stopped : )
Dracula, pages 7-35, Chapters 1&2.
Jonathan Harker is on his way to Transylvania to meet with Count Dracula to take about land Dracula had purchased in London. On his trip there, there was much foreshadowing to show that bad things would happen to Jonathan. He began to be very fearful, dreading the fact that he ever came. He finally arrived, realizing Dracula is quite an odd character. At the end of my reading he concludes that he is Dracula’s prisoner.
The thing that stuck out to me the most was all of the warning Jonathan received before arriving to the castle. His landlord at a stop along the way could not speak anything of Dracula, and his companions along travel offered him gifts of good faith and blessings. In addition, there were crosses along the roads, and people were crossing themselves.
Good luck on Day 1 of your reading. I’m looking forward to hearing what you think about your research novels!
