Pg: 19-35 Chapter 2
Paul talks about life before the military, how it was so much easier then when he joined the military he said “it had taught him more hard lessons about life than a decade at school”. Many of the men feel they were cut off from life because they don’t have anywhere to go after being a soldier, with not having any jobs or having anyone to go home to, they said they are young and will have to deal with this for the rest of their lives with nothing else to focus on. While the older men have a family waiting at home for them and will quickly forget about the trenches and death.
1984 pages 41-62
In these pages we learn more about the place that Winston Smith is working at and some insight on some people and things in the work place. One character named Tollotson is working so hard that he barely seems human and his knee and mouth are extremely close to the mouth piece and teleprompter.
The part I found most intriguing is a ton of new people Winston does not know start showing up which I think means Big brother is taking people and just putting people to work where they see fit.
Dracula
pages 34-53 chapter 4 & 5
Jonathan wakes up and tries to visit the room that the girl tried to bite him in the night before, the door was locked. That made him realize that everything that happened the night before WAS NOT a dream. Later, Dracula told him to write 3 more letters to people, lying to them about where he is at. Some time later, Jonathan tries to throw letters that he wrote himself, asking for help, out the window to people walking by but Dracula caught him doing it and burned the letters. Later, a lady was screaming up at Dracula’s room for her child that Dracula had stolen. He calls for wolves and they eat her. Jonathan then tries to escape a little while after that then ends up in a room where he sees Dracula sleeping in a coffin. He tries to search him for keys but ends up slashing him with a shovel. He then plans to climb down the castle wall or die trying.
This chapter shifts back to Mina and Lucy’s letters. Mina writes to Lucy apologizing for writing back to her so slow and the reason why is because she has been very busy. Lucy tells Mina that she is in love and that 3 people have proposed to her. Later, Stewart feels depressed about Lucy’s rejection. Morris invites 3 guys over to celebrate Homewoods engagement and commiserate Stewart’s rejection. Homewood says that he will be there.
One significant event in the story is when Jonathan slashes Dracula with a shovel because that might of killed him.

She was dressed obviously by force and by a male. They try to get her home and safe. She was deceived. He didn’t know why he wanted to help but he felt bad for what her mother is going to have to deal with. Raskolnikov now wants a job or wants lessons. He watches people very curiously. After a long day he went to the tavern. He had a hard day he fell asleep in the grass. He dreamt of his childhood. He remembers a graveyard with him grandmother and brother buried. He remembers a time wen people where beating up a poor horse. The significance of what i read today is that alcohol has a way of getting to you.

1984 pg 36-45
Winston gets back to his flat and begins to talk about how awful children are. They were all a part of a organization called the spies. this turned them into governable little savages who absolutely adored the party. He talked about how it was normal for parents to be afraid of their children. He then begins thinking of O’Brien and mentions a strange dream he had many years ago. He was in a dark room when he heard someone say “we shall meet in the place where there is no darkness” and begins to realize, after all these years, that it was O’Briens voice. He hears the telescreen start talking about some newsflash and after they’re done speaking it started playing what is like their national anthem. He then goes on to talk about how big brother is everywhere, even on coins, stamps, etc. He also reflects on how easily he could be taken out, and nobody would even know he ever existed. He briefly talks about the disappearance of his parents and sister and a dream he had about them. He also talks about how different expressing emotions is now. He talks about how there is no more privacy, love, or friendship anymore. He continues to go on about how he doesn’t remember much before the 50s. He says that you can remember large events, but are never certain if they actually happened, and there are also long blank periods where you remember nothing. He gives an example of one of the only memories he has left of his family, an air raid. he also mentions that Oceania is pretty much constantly at war with someone. He goes on about how the party basically decides the past, a lot of what they say are lies, but people don’t remember anything so they trust what the party tells them. He talks about how he cant even remember when Big Brother or the party came into existence.
Gulliver’s Travels Pgs 36-50
In this section of my reading Gulliver tells of the other nation that is about to attack Lilliput. He creates 50 hooks and attaches them to the opposing navy’s vessels. When he is unable to be seen by the Emperor they think he has died, yet he is only swimming back to shore for an astonishing victory. After this great victory the king attempts to have him become a force used to enslave the opposing nation, to which he refuses. After this Gulliver asks to see the diplomats of the Blefuscudians to converse with them. This is all seen as a offensive behavior by the king and his court. Some time later the queens bedchamber catches fire and Gulliver puts it out in what is considered an unseemly manner. The next chapter is about the education practices of the Lilliputians and discusses their laws and governing. He spends a lot of time discussing traditions and cultural differences. From there he talks about his living conditions, the clothes made for him, and the way he ate. He dwells on a specific time in which he has the royals and the treasurer for a meal. He finishes with a story about how the treasures wife fancy’s him but has never done anything inappropriate or seen him incognito. He does this for her honor.
I thought that the way he discussed the woman at the end of the chapter was important because it showed a lot about his character
